Queen Elizabeth National Park is the most famous park for being home to lions in Uganda. The reason behind its fame is that it is home to the rare tree-climbing lions.

Climbing trees has not been a common habit among lions. However, recent studies have revealed that lions have started climbing trees due to many reasons. Some theories suggest that lions climb trees to spot prey from a higher elevation so they can set their trap. Other theories suggest that lions climb trees to escape Savannah insects and small parasites that are common on the ground.

In this article, we delve into different national parks where one can see lions in Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

This is one of the parks in Africa famous for being home to lions. Queen Elizabeth National Park was established in 1952 as the Kazinga Game Reserve. Later on, after the visit of Queen Elizabeth of England, the park’s name was changed to Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is the second largest national park in Uganda. More so, it is one of the best places for safari game drives in Africa.

A typical game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park involves driving through extensive savannah plains. Lions can easily be spotted in this park compared to many parks in Uganda. Avid lion lovers go beyond a game drive whenever they want to see lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. They embark on a lion-tracking adventure and spend hours in the jungle spotting these big cats. These lions are usually seen in the Kasenyi and Ishasha sectors of the park. The Ishasha Sector lies in the southern sector of the park. It is close to Buhoma in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This makes it a perfect destination for combined gorilla trekking and lion safaris.  On the other hand, the Kasenyi Sector is the northern region of the park. It has different tracks where travelers can see the lions on a Uganda tour.
