Equipment needed for fishing safaris in Murchison

Within Murchison Falls National Park, anglers catch Nile Perch from the Nile River using a “Catch and Release” method. This method involves catching the fish, admiring its beauty, and then releasing it back into the water unharmed. The fish is carefully handled to minimize stress and injury, and it is released in a way that maximizes its chances of survival. Experienced captains, with years of expertise, guide this process and ensure that fish are returned safely to the water, allowing future anglers to enjoy the thrill of reeling them in. This practice provides the fish population’s sustainability and adds an ethical dimension to your fishing experience. You wouldn’t want to return after five years only to find that your favorite activity during your Uganda safari is no longer available.

Nile Perch and Catfish are popular fish species targeted using live baits or casting lures. To enhance your fishing adventure, consider spinning for smaller species, like tiger fish. A rod measuring between 2.5 and 3 meters, paired with either a fixed spool or multiplier reel, is advisable. A 2-meter spinning rod with a 5 kg line is sufficient for smaller fish.

Any reel, whether a fixed spool or multiplier, capable of handling 17kg, is suitable for Nile Perch and catfish. However, your preference and skill level with multipliers also play a role. Choose any reel you can comfortably cast with small spinners to target tiger fish and smaller species.

Although first-time visitors can rent basic equipment for a fee, it’s advisable for anglers, particularly those experienced with their fishing style, to bring their gear.

What to pack for fishing safaris in Murchison Falls National Park

Like many remote Uganda Wildlife safari locations, Murchison Falls National Park lacks stores or supermarkets. Therefore, it is essential to bring all required supplies, such as spare batteries, insect repellent, sunscreen, cigarettes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, medications, and any accessories for electronic devices and cameras.

So, if you’re organizing a fishing trip in Murchison Falls National Park, you must bring ample sun protection. This should include wide-brimmed hats, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses, which also help you see through the water and locate fish for sight casting.

Bring comfortable hiking boots for shore fishing on the steep, rugged rocks.

Additionally, it’s advisable to wear lightweight clothing in dark or neutral colors (like gray, khaki, and crown) for fishing, as these colors help keep you cooler and are less appealing to tsetse flies. It’s crucial to wear long sleeves and trousers for protection against bugs, while bright colors such as red and blue should be minimized, as they tend to attract tsetse flies.

Packing a windbreaker, rain jacket, and a sweater is wise, as cold weather, wind, and rain are essential considerations when traveling on the River.
