Akagera National Park offers absolute savanna wildlife viewing tours and it is located in the Eastern province of Rwanda. Created in 1934, Akagera happens to be Rwanda’s biggest park with a land area measuring 1122 sq. km, and shelters all the big 5 game. This savanna park has plenty of savanna wildlife including the Maasai giraffes, zebras, elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, roan antelopes, warthogs, elands, topis 500 bird species, etc.

Volcanoes NP is where you will be tracking gorillas and this protection is lying in the Northern Province. It is a 160 sq. km conservancy area established in 1925 and supports not only mountain gorillas but also many other species including golden monkeys, and 200 bird species like Kivu ground thrush.

Day 1: Airport or hotel pick up –drive to Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is the most accessible Rwanda Park taking you only 2.5 hours’ drive. This park is set in the Eastern Province, stretching towards Tanzania’s borders and you will arrive early, and have lunch at leisure in the safari lodge. You will spend the rest of the evening chilling with your group in the lodge, sharing stories and so much more.

Day 2: At leisure- explore Akagera – Game drive & boat cruise

Enjoy a delicious breakfast. After, meet the driver guide for pick up, and as early as 6:00 am.  Begin your game drive. The 2-3 hours bush game drive involves exploring the rich game tracks in Akagera National Park. Expect to see elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, impalas, elands, topis, zebras, rhinos, and birds, etc. Get back to the lodge for a leisurely lunch and relaxation.  Return for an afternoon session which includes a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Lake Ihema offers unforgettable encounters with aquatic life such as hippos, crocodiles, and birds like kingfishers.

Day 3: From Akagera-drive to Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy a delicious cup of tea/coffee. You will set off for an early game drive to catch up with early risers. Later, proceed to Volcanoes National Park, about a 5 5-hour drive while viewing the breathtaking landscape of the Eastern and Northern Provinces.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park gorilla trek & Ibyi’wacu village tour

Briefing about gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda will be conducted at Kinigi starting at 7:00 am. Get to know the different gorilla trekking rules/etiquette to follow on a search for the gorilla family that will be assigned to you. Within Volcanoes National Park alone, about 12 gorilla groups are open for trekking.  These include; Hirwa, Titus group, Kwitonda, Susa A, Agashya, Sabyinyo, Umubano, Amahoro, Karisimbi family, Ugenda and Pablo.

At 8:00 am, you will be off from Kinigi for an actual trek to see mountain gorillas in the wild. This is expected to go for 2-6 hours which includes one hour of a close interaction. You will be walking back after taking pictures and learning the various ways of how these apes behave. In the evening, you will have an addition of Ibyi’wacu cultural village tour. It comes with great entertainment from local dances and music performance.

Day 5: Back to Kigali for departure or relax at the hotel

At leisure, enjoy breakfast and then check out of the lodge facility. Begin your 2-3 hours’ drive back to Kigali.  Proceed with city tour to Kigali memorial center, former presidential palace and tour the main market. Settle for lunch in one of the incredible hotels/restaurants.  Your tour driver guide drops you off at the airport or hotel.
